
About Matt
Matthew Lowy is an NYC-based composer, music director, arranger, orchestrator, and pianist. He is a member of the BMI Lehman Engel Advanced Musical Theater Workshop, where he received the First Year Jerry Harrington Musical Theatre Award in 2019. He is currently the composer for an in-development musical adaptation of Marvin Hamlisch's children's book, Marvin Makes Music, with Caitlin Collins (book/lyrics). His original musicals have been performed in Sound Bites with Theatre Now (These Walls, 2020-2022), NYTF Winterfest 2020 (These Walls; winner, Best Short Musical), C.I.C. Theater in Boston (How Christmas Feels, 2017), and the New York International Fringe Festival (Fallen Skies, Overall Excellence Award in Music Composition, 2016). Matt holds a B.M. in Music Composition from The Boston Conservatory (summa cum laude).
Recent music director/pianist credits include Sarah Silverman's The Bedwetter at Arena Stage (Assoc. MD), The Sabbath Girl at Penguin Rep. and Off-Broadway at 59E59 (MD/Pianist), and Fiddler on the Roof at Paper Mill Playhouse (Assoc. MD). Matt's Broadway subbing credits include The Music Man (Piano/Keyboard) and Beetlejuice (Key 2), and he has worked as a rehearsal pianist for Encores at City Center under Patrick Vacciarello and Mary-Mitchell Campbell (A Chorus Line, Dear World, Oliver!).
Matt spent years touring with musicals nationally and internationally, including A Chorus Line (U.S., Japan, and Shanghai; music director/conductor/orchestrations) and 42nd Street (U.S.; music director/conductor). He has also served as Music Supervisor and Orchestrator for the national tours of An American in Paris (2020 and 2022) and South Pacific (2022). Since 2010, he has worked on New Voices at the Paper Mill Playhouse, as a music director, conductor, arranger, and pianist, variously.
Currently freelance in NYC, Matt frequently music directs concerts at 54 Below and Green Room 42, as well as workshops and readings of new musicals in development.
